Dear Sir,

Letters of recommendation are a very important part of the application process. As colleges become more and more sought out from the increasing number of applicants each year, the need to stand out from the competition is also increasing. Below we will provide helpful information on how to write a college recommendation as well as advice for tailoring each letter.

A high school transcript can help tell an admissions office a lot about a candidate, but a college recommendation letter provides an opportunity for them to see the whole person. While recommendation letters are never a bad idea to include in the application, even if the college does not require one, many colleges do necessitate the inclusion of one. Here is some advice to keep in mind when writing a college recommendation letter:

Know the candidate x it may sound obvious, but it is important that you know the candidate well. After all, how can you write a college recommendation letter for a someone you know little about? Recommendations written for candidates with a vague familiarity are often identifiable and can do more harm than good.

How you know the candidate x when you write a college recommendation letter, make sure to include how you know the candidate as well as the length of time you have known that person.

Provide relevant information x be sure to find out the purpose of the recommendation so as to provide relevant information about the candidate and his or her specific qualifications. If the recommendation is to supplement an application, discuss how that person is an appropriate candidate for the college he or she is applying to. Despite its purpose, however, the overall goal of a college recommendation letter is to attest to the capabilities and character of the candidate.

Obtain a rsum x another tip on how to write a collage recommendation letter is to first obtain the students rsum with a listing of his or her GPA, activities, awards, leadership roles, community service, employment experience and special skills. The more information you have about a particular candidate, the more constructive your recommendation can be.

Personalize the letter x to help make the letter more personal, before writing a college recommendation letter, it is important to determine the person to whom the letter should be addressed. If the student is unaware of the name, the letter may begin "Dear Selection Committee."

Proofread the letter x one of the most important tips on how to write a college recommendation letter is making sure to proofread it when finished. A letter containing grammatical errors will appear unprofessional and may leave a negative impression.

Mailing the letter x establish with the student whether the recommendation letter must be mailed in an official envelope from your institution, or if it can be included with the application. If it is to accompany the application, return the letter to the candidate in a sealed envelope.

Determine the deadline x doublexcheck with the student as to the deadline of the college recommendation letter. Ideally, you will be given an adequate amount of time to complete a positive, detailed letter, however, the most important detail is that it is received before the application deadline.

Save the letter x when you have finished writing a recommendation, be sure to save it in order to help make writing the next college recommendation letter easier. The student will likely be applying to more than one school and may ask that you write a separate recommendation for each one. Although it is important that each letter is tailored to the application at hand, select information can be recycled for multiple letters. It is more convenient to tailor the original passage than to repetitively recollect the advice on how to write a college recommendation.

  What Colleges Really Want

Colleges place a large emphasis on a students academic ability because what is accomplished in high school is the strongest predictor of their academic success in college. What colleges really want, however, is a winxwin situation. They want to admit students who will thrive at their institution, not only for the students benefit, but for their own as well. As more and more students become collegexbound, colleges and universities will become increasingly selective, placing more emphasis on the ability to know how to write a college recommendation letter.

As a teacher, counselor, employer or personal acquaintance of a collegexbound teen, you may at some point receive a request for help in writing a college recommendation letter. These students are not only placing their trust in you, they are putting you in the unique position to make an impact on whether or not they are admitted to their college of choice. Following this advice on how to write a college recommendation will help to ensure a professional letter and give your candidate a greater likelihood of being accepted into his or her college of choice.

Program: Teenager & Juvenile Developmental Psychology

In my undergraduate program, I received education across two fields—a degree program in law at the Law School of x University and a degree program in psychology at x University. My rigorous academic trainings across those two fields have given me necessary qualifications for pursuing a more advanced program either in psychology or in law, endowing me with a unique advantage in interdisciplinary knowledge.

As far as I am concerned, law and psychology are reciprocal. They all pertain to human behavior. As a matter of fact, my thesis in law, entitled “ xX “ explores juvenile delinquency by examining the complicated psychological factors of the younger generation of China in family, school and neighborhood settings. However, there are essential differences between them. In terms of the causal relationships of human behavior, law is primarily concerned with the treatment of the consequences of human behavior while psychology probes into the motivations that cause people to act as they do. In the framework of human relations, law aims at orderly and wellxregulated social relationship while psychology, with its interventions into the process of human development, seeks to facilitate the healthy development of the individuals.

While law and psychology are both indispensable to the proper functioning of our society, when it comes to making a choice between those two fields in which to pursue a graduate program, I decide to opt for a program in Developmental Psychology. My decision is motivated by the fact that law can only deal with the aftermath of human behavior whereas psychology can provide preventive measures against possible negative human behavior. Child & adolescent psychology, a field I am interested in, may facilitate the development of healthy personality structure that may enable children and adolescents interact with the society in a harmonious manner.

I have received sound academic trainings that a student of psychology can expect in China, excelling particularly in Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Experimental Psychology and other core courses, all of which have imparted to me the necessary theoretical knowledge. My 87/100 GPA in Psychology has made me the top student in my class and the winner of a series of the university’s topxlevel scholarships. As an undergraduate, I have attempted at some tentative research by submitting essays and research papers to provincialxlevel and universityxlevel journals (please refer to my Resume). In performing those researches, I find that I have benefited considerably from my solid mathematics foundation and the related methodology—my score for the Advanced Mathematics course is 98/100 while the SPSS was nearly full mark. I have mastered important statistical and quantitative methods, computer programming and LISREL with much facility and I excel in designing experiments and preparing questionnaires.

I started to perform formal academic research at the Developmental Psychology Lab in x University two years by working as a research assistant to Prof. x, a leading Chinese scholar on social development in childhood and adolescence and peer relations. By focusing on the peer relations, social cognition, social selfxconcept, attributions, and past social experiences, I completed a fullxlength research paper x, which became a poster presentation at the x. My research indicates that in addition to maintaining an appropriate level of social selfxconcept and optimistic attributional style, it is essentially worthwhile to emphasize another two strategies to improve the positive peer nominations: to pay special attention to the attributions to negative events of the life, and to attribute social popularity or success to some stable causes. Based on my distinguished academic performance, I attended the x and the x.

Off campus, I have worked as a social worker offering psychological consulting for the “No Worry Teenagers” column for the authoritative journal x, dealing with the problems concerning interpersonal relations and social cognition of adolescents and young adults. This experience allowed me to gain insight into many important aspects of the mental lives of this group of people beyond the mere statistical data. However, it is a regret that my knowledge is insufficient to offer adequate consulting service to my audience of such diverse backgrounds. This fact reveals to me the need to undertake more advanced studies to improve my professional competence.

I am strongly interested in the developmental psychology of adolescents because by helping adolescents build up a healthy psychology that may enable them to successfully integrate into the competitive world of adults, hence fewer social problems could be created. In my proposed program, I would like to concentrate on the following subjects: social cognitive and socialxemotional development in childhood and adolescence; peer relations and family relations and their influence on development; resilience in high risk settings; development of selfxesteem; gender differences and similarities, and research methods. The University of x’s graduate education is very strong in those fields. Your faculty consists of distinguished professors who come from leading universities and have made important research achievements. Your program offers students a total of 14 labs, among which Multiple Identities and Interpersonal Interactions Lab is most relevant to my study. I expect that your Ph.D. program can give me instruction in the fundamental theories and knowledge of developmental psychology and also give me rigorous training in planning, conducting and evaluating research. I would like to identify Prof.x as my potential advisor, whose research interests covers a wide spectrum, including most of the fields I am interested in.

To me, psychology means care, psychological research is to find out how to care and psychological service is to offer the care. My career objective is to develop into a researchxoriented professor who can perform substantial research on adolescent psychology. I will study those features of psychology that Chinese adolescents share with their x counterparts as China is under heavy influences of x culture. But I would also examine the role of traditional Chinese culture in shaping the psychology of Chinese adolescents. Apart from my professional activities, I will continue to offer voluntary, nonxprofit consulting services to those who are in need. Adolescent psychological consulting is only of recent origin and much is to be improved. My prospective x education will enable me to make important contributions in this regard.

"All I know about leadership I learned from . . ." What items could a person use to describe leadership qualities?

Inspired by the student council advisors at my high school.

Student council was a big part of my life in high school. I have participated in it since my frst year of high school. When I frst joined, I was quiet, na?ve, and unwilling to participate in many activities. I was scared to meet new people and afraid to apply myself. This all began to change. Half way through my frst year in student council, one of the advisors can up to me and asked why I did not participate that much. I did not have an answer for her and did not know how to respond. After this, I began to think of an answer. I became frustrated and decided to change. I started to show up at events and had a great time. I realized I loved this and wanted to start leading these activities. In my sophomore, junior, and now my senior year of high school, I asserted myself and took on a strong leadership role in student council. I did not fgure out the answer to why I was so reserved until this year with the help of this question.

When I looked up leadership in the dictionary, it said that it was the capacity to lead and the act or instance of leading. These are two very broad defnitions of leadership. Many people have different notions of what this word actually means. When I was challenged to use different items to describe what leadership actually is, I thought this was going to be a hard and obnoxious task. What could I learn from comparing leadership to a stuffed animal or a rubber chicken? But when I sat down to come up with a couple of answers, I realized that leadership could be compared to almost anything a person wants.

All I know about leadership I learned from a calculator. A calculator can add everything together to come up with the best answer. It can delet e what is unnecessary and only include what is important. It can solve any type of problem. These are all important equalities a leader has to have. A leader has to be able to add all of the ideas together to make the best possible plan. Leaders have to know how to decipher the good and the bad out of an idea. They have to be versatile and know how to deal with different types of issues.

All I know about leadership I learned from a ball. A ball is able to bounce back up after it is dropped. It is round and has no creases. A ball can be thrown back and forth to different people. All of these qualities are also leadership qualities. A leader has to be ready for every situation that is thrown at him or her. He or she has to be able to bounce back from any setbacks and never dwell on the past. Leaders have to exhibit many qualities and never be closedxminded about a situation. A leader must be able to delegate when he or she cannot get the work done. They have to trust everyone they lead to be able to "catch the ball" and keep a project rolling.

This activity made me realize that being a leader is so much more than just having authority and having the ability to take control of a situation. A leader has to be trusting of all the people he or she leads and, leaders must be able to combine ideas into one encompassing idea. They cannot sit in the background and watch events happen; they have to jump in and be involved. They should not delegate all their responsibilities away.

Leadership is more than what the dictionary says it is.

I learned through all of this that I have many of these qualities.

I have the ability to solve problems, lead through adversity, and be versatile. From answering this question, I realized that I could lead effectively, even if my leadership style is different from other individuals. When I joined student council in my frst year of high school, I did not have these qualities because I was never put into a situation where I had to lead. I was too reserved to try. When I tried, I learned that I could succeed in this. I did not realize until I answered this question about leadership. I was never able to see that being a leader is not just about taking control of a group and telling everyone what to do When I was a freshman, I thought leadership was this. I did not know that did not have to be forceful and strict. I stereotyped a leader then. Thisis where I went wrong. A leader is about being yourself and never letting anyone change you. I thought I had to change to be a good leaderOnly when I expanded my comfort zone did I realize this was not trueIt only took three years and a silly question/game to fgure this out.

Applied Program: Wireless Telecommunications

On August 27, 2002, at the Central Institute of the Datang Telecom Technology and Industry Group based in Beijing, a young woman, full of energy and selfxconfidence, was giving a presentation entitled “The Design of the Switching Numerical Method of the Radio Resource Management (RRM) Strategy in TDxSCDMA, and the Testing of Its Simulated Systems,” which received rapt attention and high remarks from all the experts in Computer and Telecommunications who attended the meeting. That woman was I. At present, TDxSCDMA, WxCDMA, and CDMA 2000 are considered the main technological standards in the third generation of the world’s technological development in mobile telecommunications. And the design of a switching computation method for the RRM Strategy is a key element and technological crux for the TDxSCDMA technology. In retrospection, I found that it was my great enthusiasm for mobile telecommunications, and my persistent pursuit of accuracy and perfection that have helped me win accolades from colleagues and experts.

In China, since the TDxSCDMA uses a smart antenna, it makes a demand for a finer research on the computation method for the RRM Strategy, in areas such as PC, DCA, and HC. To me, a new starter in the company, it was a real challenge. Since the research team was new, it lacked engineering data and practical experience, although the equipment of the lab was quite advanced. It was only after much library research, thinking, and consultation with experts did I find a RRM computation method suitable for a smart antenna. Because a smart antenna has its advantages of a more accurate VE locating and reduced searching areas, this computation method effectively lowers the complexity of the switching process and its failure rate. During the time when I worked for the project, I often stayed up several days in a roll to perfect a lab test. But I also derived an enormous sense of satisfaction and fulfillment after overcoming obstacles, which more than compensated the pains and difficulties that I had to go through.

The rapid development of mobile telecommunication technology places a high demand on professionals working in this field. To a certain extent, it has to be a labor of love. My keen interest in mobile telecommunications emanated from the concept of “personal communication.” During my undergraduate years at the Northwest University of Industry, I spent much of my spare time browsing over professional publications and journals, to keep myself abreast of current developments. The concept of “personal communication” I encountered during this process impressed me immensely. A system of “personal communication” is one that allows the user to communicate at anytime, anyplace, to anyone, and in any way. It painted such a beautiful of picture of a future society that I became fully convinced that it is a subject well worth my lifelong pursuit. This was why I chose Mobile Telecommunications as my area of specialization in the graduate program. As a graduate student, I completed several research projects independently and successfully, including, for instance, “Turbo Code and the Application of Its Coding Concept.” In short frame conditions, the Turbo Code, with its improved application in engineering, seems to have a bright future in realxtime voicexdata service (Please see the attached article). After completing my graduate degree, I entered Datang Group, a pioneer in China’s software development. Here I did software design for the switch control template used at the RNC equipment for the TDxSCDMA system, and developed a switching computation method for the RRM Strategy. I went through the entire process of software design for the switch control template for the RNC equipment, from topic analysis to the project outline and then to actual program writing.

The present development of telecommunication technology indicates that the smart antenna, software radio, and the transmission technology of subline下行highxspeed subdivided exchange data (下行高速分组交换数据传输技术) are key technologies for today’s mobile telecommunications. Software radio, in particular, has attracted much public attention. The use of DSP and software to solve the problem of wireless interfaces of diverse standards on a public hardware platform has become a major issue pursued by many professionals in our field. I too hope to make my own contribution to the technological development in this area. In the next few years, the traditional concept of using chips to build wireless equipment for mobile telecommunication will be seriously challenged. In recent years, the technologies and standards of the third generation of mobile telecommunication have been rapidly updated. Software radio, I believe, will be the future of our trade.

My desire to know more about computer engineering prompted me to rise above my present conditions. The United States, as technological superpower, have firstxrate teaching faculty and research facilities in the world. Its ideological openness and tolerance make a sharp contrast to Chinese culture, which tends to value tradition rather than innovation. Wireless telecommunication may be said to be one of the newest research areas, and it is new concepts and new vision that give life to the industry. I believe that in the fine research environment in the United States, I will be able to make “shortcuts” in attaining my academic and career goals.

I would like to apply for admission to the Center for Wireless Telecommunications of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. As the most prestigious research institute in Wireless Telecommunications, the Center has a large number of famed scholars and professionals dedicated to the theoretic research of Wireless Telecommunications. Meanwhile, it maintains close contact with the telecommunication industry, and in this way can test the theory in practical experimentation, which in turn promotes theoretic research. It is an ideal place for me to fully develop my research potential.

I look forward to finding a teaching position at college level in China after completing my graduate education, which will allow me to continue my research work in Wireless Telecommunications. I will impart my theoretic and practical knowledge to my students, and hope that this will benefit China’s wireless telecommunication industry, and society at large. I will make every effort to make the idea of “personal communication” a reality.

IM GOING RUNNING TODAY. I am not concerned about my calorie consumption forthe day,nor am I anxious to get in shape for the winter season. I just want togo running。

I used to dislike running. "If you dont win this game, youre all runningfive miles tomorrow," the field hockey coach used to warn, during those lastdays of October when the average temperature seemed to be decreasingexponentially. And so,occasionally,my griefxstricken team would run numerousmiserable laps around the fields. At the end of these excursions, our faces andlimbs would be numb, and we would all have developed those notorious fluxlikesymptoms; but the running made us better in the long run,I suppose.Nevertheless,I counted down the days until the end of the field hockey season, vowing never to put on a pair of running shoes again. Then I surprised myself bysigning up for outdoor track in the second half of sophomore year. I was foolishto have believed that I could ever escape this insidious and magneticaddiction。

Anyone would have thought that Id be off the team in a few days, but thelast week of January caught me splashing through puddles of melted ice, andFebruary winds nearly blew me off the track. I looked forward to practices thistime around,to the claps and the persistent cheers of my fellow trackies. I wasfeeling a "runners high" spurred by the endorphins released by exercise. But toattribute my affinity for running solely to chemistry diminishes the personalimportance that running has for me。

I like running—in the cool shade of the towering oak trees, and in the warmsunlight spilling over the horizon, and in the drops of rain falling gently fromthe clouds. Certain things become clear to me when Im running—only whilerunning did I realize that "hippopoxxxxxi" is possibly the funniest word in theEnglish language, and only while running did I realize that the travel sectionof The York Times does not necessarily provide an accurate depiction of theentire world. Running lends me precious moments to contemplate my life:whilerunning I find time to dream about changing the world,to think about recentdeath of a classmate,or to wonder about the secret to college admission。

Running is the awareness of hurdles between me and the finish line; runningis the desire to overcome them. Running is putting up with aches and pains, relishing the knowledge that,in the end,I will have built strength andendurance. Running is the instant clarity of vision with which I can see myfuture just one hundred yards in the distance; it is the understanding thatthese crucial steps will determine victory or defeat。

Running is not the most important thing in the world to me,but it is whatfulfills me when time permits. And right now, before the sun goes down,I liketo take advantage of the road that lies ahead。

I am a student, graduated from BaoYang middle school, Nanning, GuangXi autonomous region, in 20xx. I am still studying in high school now, because I was not eolled by the ideal university last year. Recently, I have a dream to study abroad. Then I search online and find that it is more convenient and suitable for me to go to New Zealand for study.

First, New Zealand is a multicultural country, which has the most advanced education in the world. Second, the tuition is lower than other countries’, which I think is mo

re reasonable for me. Finally, the climate of New Zealand is similar with the climate of the South of China. Considering above reasons, I told my parents my plan on going to New Zealand for study, and my parent agreed with me.

As a girl, I like preschool education since I was young. Nowadays, Chinese parents, who want their children to get better education, pay more attention to preschool education. If I study specialized curriculums on preschool education, I will go back China and work hard on preschool education after leaving college.

My plan is as follows: first, I plan to study English in language institute for about a half year in New Zealand. Then, I will study specialized curriculums on preschool education.I believe I have the ability of study abroad, because I have finished all high school curriculums. Besides, my parents both have job and have rich income, so they will support me to finish my study. After finishing my study, I will return to my homeland and work on preschool education, so as to realize my life value.

Dear Miss Li,

The more extensively one studies any subject, the more common ground onewill find it shares with all the others. This can be taken to its furthestextent when applied to literature x because there is nothing that is not, orcannot be, explored in literature. Of course, this is only half of the appeal ofreading and writing. For an example of the second, look to Nabokov x what does, for instance, Lolita, teach us? Only how the English language can be manipulatedinto something new and exhilarating, wonderfully poetic, wickedly ironic. I havea bad reading habit: I am too easily seduced by a fancy prose style.

There is nothing a true bookworm loves more than rifling through abookshop, be it the charmingly musty atmosphere of a secondxhand store, or theprintxfresh fragrance of Waterstones. American literature is my currentinfatuation: My favourite book right now is Catchx22, an insanely hilarious (yetoften extremely thoughtxprovoking) satire set in the Second World War. I havealso recently discovered that contemporary of Joseph Heller, Kurt Vonnegut, andam absolutely taken with his novels. They are all strikingly original, all ofthem terribly sad and terribly funny. AxLevel English Literature has helped meto become a better reader; I am able to dissect texts and see the underlyingmeanings that may be present, and analyse the choices the author has made inlanguage, form and structure. It has also taught me to improve my writing: it ismore flowing, my expression is clearer, I have been able to curb my tendency todigress (just a little). I love exploring the possibilities of language anddiscovering new writers and books to feed an old obsession. Last year, a friendand I set up and now run a small book club; we have recently found ourselves (tono complaint!) in an accidentally Russian rut. We have read Dostoevsky, we haveread Pasternak, we have read Turgenev, we have (appropriately, given howNabokovian this repetition sounds) read Nabokov. Last summer, I organised forthe book group to attend a reading of Chuck Palahniuks x an author of whom I ama huge fan, perhaps best known for his novel Fight Club (later somewhat mutatedinto the cult film) whose excessively quotable, delightfully cynical socialcommentary is characterised by its repetetive patterns, unexpected metaphors, and sometimes disturbing themes. The reading was an incredible experience! Ilove concerts and have been attending the theatre since I was a child, but thereis still something about live performances that will always remain a wonderfulsurprise to me. That folkish storytelling tradition is such a necessary part ofliterature.

Either symbiotic or parasitic is the relationship between this love and theother one; philosophy. Anyone who has devoted their time to thinking about whatwe could perhaps call the fundamental questions of philosophy x those concerningGod, and death, and that word so often thrown around (it sounds a little commonnow) purpose, good and evil, right and wrong x will agree it is a ratherconsuming preoccupation. When this is the case, us readers can always return tothat old escapists retreat of literature x but then, can it not be said thatsome of the best books ask more questions than they answer? Books are in fact toblame for my interest in philosophy, as they are for many other things: in thisinstance, it was a combination of a love of the Greek Classics and JosteinGaarders Sophies World, a summary of a good two thousandxodd years ofphilosophers and philosophies. In the years since, I have read a number of otherbooks on philosophy, most recently returning to my fascination with the ancientGreeks to read Platos Republic; a mindxblowing excersise in the early days ofGreek philosophy. The techniques used and the questions asked are certainlystill very applicable today. My father is also something of a philosopher, andhe has developed my interest, teaching me about and debating with me on variouscomplex philosophical issues. In spite of, or more correctly because of myconstant (allow me a colloquialism) philosophizing, I have become a christian xif a bit of an unorthodox one. I regularly attend church, and for me the mainvalue of this is the educational one. Religion has also probably been the spurto the eleven hours of voluntary work I do at the British Red Cross bookshop(which has unexpectedly and brilliantly paid off since the manager asked me totake home any books id like!). This year my sixth form started a twilight A2 inReligious Education: Philosophy and Ethics, and a month into the course, Iabsolutely love it. It has given me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge inthe subject, suggested to me new reading material, and provided an arena forphilosophical debate.

An element of philosophy that seems to have gone out of fashion is that ofpolitical and economic philosophy. Stubborn and questioning from the first, Itook my earliest political stance at three when I became aware of animalcruelty; although this is still an important issue for me, at the moment Iexcersize more concern over the state of our democracy. I am a member of a partyand various pressure groups x and we are advised, when writing the personalstatement, to avoid expressing a political bias either way! I shall try not to,but hope that you concur when I say that I believe in democracy, equality, freedom of speech, and as little government involvement in our lives as can bepossible without risking anybodys safety, freedom and prosperity. My concernover current affairs is, however, steeped in my interest in political theory. Asfar as that goes, my Sociology AxLevel course is of great interest. Sociologycovers almost every aspect of our lives, and so informs political theory anddebate no end; learning about the various perspectives on how society workspushes you to further question our culture and the prevailing normals andvalues, and to identify not ontly the problems in society but the possiblesolutions.

Now, then, for the outside interests x for me, this is mainly in thearts. All too often I hear art galleries described as boring, but Londonswide variety of galleries and exhibitions are regular haunts for me. As well asbeing a lover of fine art, I am very into illustration, and am a big fan of theGraphic Novel x or more basically, comics! My favourite art medium, eitherthis or sculpture x there is something that is much more real and intense insculpture than in twoxdimensional art. Juan Munoz puts this across perhapsbetter than any other recent artist. I have been drawing and painting for a longtime, guided by my artist grandfather, and am taking a Photography AxLevel. Ihave learned how to compose a good photograph, create an absorbing filmsequence, and develop my own photos x as far as I am concerned, the mostexciting part. Music and drama are also loves of mine x I was raised on BobDylan, establishing in me particularly an appreciation of lyrics, and I suspectthat I have been writing music myself practically as long as I have known how towrite! I can play very simple guitar, but someday would like to develop myabilities, as well as learn other instruments. The theatre is something else Iwas brought up with, but only in the past year or so have discovered thepossibilities of the musical x my favourite being the fairly recent Wicked.

To conclude, very simply: the word philosophy is derived from the greekfor love and knowledge x a philosopher, a lover of knowledge. This describesme perfectly. The depth of my interest is proof that I would be able to developmy own skills and contribute to the course that I choose. I hope I have managedto convey just how much I would value the opportunity to attend a universitywhere i could fully immerse myself in learning.

  Yours sincerely,

Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its globalposition. Though more and more companies built, management of companies cannotcatch up with the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning fieldin China,so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management inEngland.

The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to mychildhood. My father was among the first of China’s new breed of modernentrepreneurs. As a young girl,it was inspirational hearing about his businessventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. Mymother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simplecalculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I,also, would somedaybe able to enter the realm of business.

With the time of growing up,I preferred reading books to satisfy mycuriosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered.Subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and myknowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasingrapidly.

As a high school student in China,I had to concentrate on the CollegeEntrance Examination (CEE),even so,books not related to the exams were neverexcluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June,20xx,Iwas so nervous that I didn’t score well in the CEE exam. I eolled in thedepartment of Computer Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional ChineseMedicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be afailure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms,I realizedthat I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At thatmoment,I lost my direction and objectives. My persistence in reading saved mefrom the dark situation. As a matter of fact,I enjoyed reading the booksincluded Encyclopedia American, and some books about management by PeterF.Drucker. I began to notice something interesting: Why some companies canproduce more than others? Why some company can sell more than others? Why somecompanies can build up but others cannot when facing the same difficulties?

With the questions in my mind,I started to read many relevant books. I waslucky to read the book “Jack: Straight from the Gut”by Jack Welch,in Which JohnA. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for acompany. When I was a junior,I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. Ishould manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shopeven made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the runthe shop. From this,my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business hasbeen greatly developed, definitely I was increasingly interested in what I wasdoing. By December,20xx,I had finally determined to take business managementas my career instead of IT. To accumulate more relevant knowledge,I strived togain more practical work experience in some big companies.

Fortunately,as a senior,I began conducting an internship in theArchitecture Company in Zhejiang Province. Over six months,I worked as anassistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the differentdepartments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadenedmy perspective of management conditions and business performance in differentindustries. The experience showed me that management is much more important thanthat of I thought in big companies. After graduation,I continued my work inthis company. In May,20xx,the company offered me an opportunity to participatein an training program held by a famous management school. Through inxdepthdiscussions with teachers and students in the classes, they all encouraged me topursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual abilityand the brand new ideas I mentioned.

During the short period of training,I realized that pursuing a higherdegree in management is a wise choice for me now. Lancaster, with its excellencein management, represents the perfect fit for my needs. In your challengingenvironment,I can build the required foundation of knowledge related tomanagement to achieve my goals. I am firmly convinced that your admission willbe my first step of success. With this in mind,I hereby submit my application, and await your favorable reply.

  yours Sincerely

Dear x,

I live in Pakistanxa country destroying itself with bombs, guns andgovernments blabber to find justifications for what it is going through;acountry where a former president is murdered in public, where the nationsconstitution and parliament are suspended at the same time, and where the voiceof a common man is unheard.

Since the last few years, I had aspired to become a doctor. The idea of"scalpels," "opened chests" and "sutures" had always intrigued me.And then ithappened! The recent unprecedented events in my country wiped off the dust ofdisillusionment from my eyes;I lost my will to become a doctor. However, theturmoil in the country led me towards newspapers and news channels, and hencePolitics.

As I involved myself into politics,I realized that it isallxembracivexwielding its way over social and economic lifexit is theomnipotent of Pakistan. It can mobilize public opinion, gear up propagandamachinery, make or repeal laws and what not.Backed up by public opinion, supportedby the majority of the legislators, armed with the means to keep the people in astate of ignorance, political power crosses the limits of dictatorialpowers.Political power, like the most powerful intoxicant, makes the persons inpower to forget social ethics, political morality and obligations.

Most of the learned youth in this country consider Politics to be "a refugefor the scoundrels" and this derogatory remark may be true if we look at thedeceptive and degenerated type of politicians indulging in a dirty game.Allthese political parties are votaries of democracy, but the way they conductthemselves inside their own parties is nothing but senselessauthoritarianism. Therefore a very few students choose to pursue Politics as aprofession, but what they dont realize is that if we dont take a stand thesystem can never be changed. Thus,I want to study Politics so I can come back tomy country and contribute what little I can do for my homeland and its people.IfI can inspire even a single person,it would be worth it.The world today isgrowing global. We are now not only to think of our own nation but as and when wethink of it,we have to keep the international perception in mind;consequently,Ichose Politics with International Relations as one of my courses.

Studying in UK will breed a sense of individuality and self reliance.Iwould be able to interact with people from everywhere and get to know abouttheir culture. This would not only open new horizons for me,but would also clearsome preconceived notions one has about the other.I have always been an activeparticipant of debates.I have participated in 3 Model UN conferences out ofwhich I was awarded with the Best Delegate award in two. I was also one of thetwo students to be selected from my school to participate in the EnglishSpeaking Union 08.Moreover, Ive taken part in Parliamentary style debatestoo. Therefore I believe I can communicate effectively in public and languagewill not be a barrier in my education.Furthermore, I have worked as an interneeat AlxShifa Eye Hospital for a month in summers. Here I learnt how to deal withpatients, use the Auto Ref, handle files and punctuality. We also campaigned to aremote area near Murree where we helped the doctors in examining the patientsfree of cost.Another experience which taught me a lot was when me and my fellowcolleagues volunteered to paint walls for the SOS Childrens Village.Inaddition,I worked with SUNGI (NGO) where a group of 5 of us had to organize anevent to pay tribute to 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I enjoy Literature, especially the works of Shakespeare,TennesseeWilliams,Thomas Hardy and Andrew Marvell.Id be delighted to study in achallenging atmosphere where I can focus on my studies.I commit to my work andmy ability to think out of the box, keenness for Politics and my perception ofthings,I understand, gives me an edge over others.I believe in myself, and ifprovided with an opportunity,Id make the university proud.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear XXX,

Mathematics and Physics have always been my favourite subjects throughoutmy schooling career, mostly due to the implications on the real world. By takingMechanical Engineering at university, I have the opportunity to continue withthese two passions of mine. I have enjoyed carrying out practical experimentswhich can then be proved using mathematical calculations. I took part in aCombined Cadet Force (CCF) and specialised in the Royal Electrical andMechanical Engineering (REME) section. In this, five pupils maintained andrepaired old cars then use them to practise driving skills on the schoolgrounds. This has given me an insight of the engineering behind everyday carsand has increased my enthusiasm to study engineering at university and thenpossibly begin a career in this field. Over the summer, I arranged for an expertto take me out to see a nodding donkey and explain how they worked. Noddingdonkeys are structures used to collect oil from the ground using fairly simpletechniques and mechanical gears

Sport has led a major role in my life over the recent years. I haveregularly taken part in interxhouse matches in rugby, basketball, hockey, andfive a side indoor football and represented my school in rugby. I also enjoyrunning and have taken part in two long distance races, one of which wassponsored and for charity. Music has also been a large influence on my life as Ihave been playing the Alto Saxophone since I was nine years of age. I feel musicis essential as it can be used to relax from the hectic school days. There arefrequent Political Society and Science Society meetings that I regularly attendwhich greatly helped me as they expand my knowledge and showed me how theorieslearnt in lessons were put into practice in real life situations. I find thesesocieties to be very intriguing because they offer me the chance to talk indepth to experts about subjects that they specialize in and have come to talk atthe meetings about, thus broadening my knowledge and interest in the subjects Itake part in

As an Upper Sixth House Prefect, I have had to take on many newresponsibilities and have learnt a lot about myself. My main role around houseas a prefect was to organise chores and jobs that needed to be done. This hastaught me a lot about organising things well in advance and making sure everyonecan do what they are asked efficiently. In Lower 6th, I was on a team of sevenpupils elected to run a fête during a school sports day. On this committee, Ifound that much planning needs to be done in preparation for such large scaleevents and even the smaller tasks needed to be done well in advance

When things needed done, leadership skills came into place to delegatetasks and bring all of the events together. On the day, the seven pupils had toperform under pressure which we did and the fête was a success.

  Yours sincerely.
