Chinese people use chopsticks and spoons, and they also use bowls to serve their meals; Westerners, on the other hand, serve food on plates, cut and eat it with a knife and fork, and have a special spoon for soup.

　　而西方人在家庭聚会或是正式宴席上，也会围坐在一起，但他们的食物是单盘独碟的，有专人先行分配食物，是一人一份的定量供应。大多数宴席是不必固定座位，可以自由走动，不仅可以充分满足个人对食物的喜好，还便于社交，便于个人之间的情感与信息的交流，而不必在餐桌上将所有的活动公之于众。这种用餐方式充分体现了西方人对人性、对自我的.尊重，强调了个人的独立和自主。 此外，在餐具方面，差异就更甚明显。中国人使用的是筷子、汤匙，吃饭也用碗盛；而西方人呢，则是盘子盛食物，用刀叉即切即吃，喝汤则有专门的汤匙。
