So the naughty John pretended to have passed out in the classroom. When Mr. Smith came in, he was so scared that he held John in his arms right away. On the way to the hospital, John burst into laughter suddenly, which made the teacher confused. After we told him that it was only a joke, Mr. Smith laughed too. We were all pleased to see him smiling at last.

1979年45岁时第一次随团去法国和德国参观。当时我能阅 读自己熟悉的专业书刊，算是代表团中英语水平比较高的。但一到外国，除了一般的问候语以外几乎都听不懂，说不了，所以根本听 不懂技术讲解。对于熟悉的专业书面材料，如果是用大写字母写成的说明，一时还反应不过来，需要在脑子中翻译成小写才看得懂。 代表团团长还不时地鼓励我“胆子大一些”。其实哪里是什么胆子大小的问题，听不懂，说不了，看不懂，哪里来的'胆子？
在国外期间，我与每一个不会外语的人一样，口袋里装着一个 纸条，上写“我住在XXX旅馆，请把我送回去。”以防一旦走失时使用。我当时是某设计院总工程师，高级工程师，看着这样的纸条， 心里真有一种说不出的被侮辱感，“我这个中国高级工程师和总工程师只有这样的水平，与文盲差不多，外国人怎么会看得起我们？” 发愤之心油然而生，回国以后下决心发奋学习，努力提高英语口语能力。
