　　比如中国的古典四大名著，在西方便有公认的翻译：《西游记》是“Pilgrimage to the West”(直译为“朝圣西方”)，《红楼梦》是“A Dream of Red Mansions”(“红色庄园之梦”)，《水浒传》是“Outlaws of the Marsh”(“沼泽地里的亡命之徒”)，《三国演义》是“The Romance of the Three Kingdoms”(“三个王国的浪漫故事”)。

　　中国的菜名和地名是非常难翻译的。2012年3月，北京出台了中国菜的官方译名，为许多菜“正名”，比如，“饺子”从原来的dumpling变成了音译“Jiaozi”。而一些老品牌也注册了新的英文名字，比如，“狗不理”的英文名字最后定为“Go Believe”。

　　而外国名字的中文翻译也颇有讲究。以电影《变形金刚》为例，其中“威震天”的英文名字为“Megatron”，直译为“超大功率电子盘封管”;而“擎天柱”的英文名字是“Optimus Prime”，译者选取“擎天白玉柱，架海紫金梁”的意思，配给了这位汽车人的首领。

　　企业和品牌名称的翻译则更为讲究，比如，“Mercedes-Benz”被译为“梅塞德斯—奔驰”，“Head&Shoulders”(直译为“头和肩膀”)被译为“海飞丝”，都被奉为业界翻译经典。

　　拍案叫绝的“错译”

　　北京西南郊的永定河上横跨着一座卢沟桥，以其高超的建桥技术和精美的石狮雕刻独具风韵，堪称古今一大奇观。

　　卢沟桥被译为“Marco Polo Bridge”，意为“马可?波罗桥”。为什么始建于800多年前的中国古桥，会有一个不折不扣的洋名字呢?原来，13世纪著名的意大利旅行家和商人马可?波罗曾游历中国达17年之久，其间到访不少古城，饱览名胜古迹。他路过北京时，邂逅卢沟桥，大感惊叹，遂记述于《马可波罗游记》一书中。

　　“这条河上有一座十分美丽的石桥，在世界上恐怕无与伦比。此桥长300步，宽8步，即使10个骑马的人在桥上并肩而行，也不会感觉狭窄不便……石柱上那些精巧的石狮，构成了一幅美丽的图画。”马可?波罗写道。

　　这是欧洲人撰写的第一部详尽描绘中国历史、文化和艺术的游记，它被翻译成多种文字后广为流传。书中被大加赞誉的卢沟桥，由此成为西方人心目中的“马可?波罗桥”。

　　不得不说，像这样既牵扯文化轶事，又容易让西方人念出的译名，对文化传播可谓“加分”不少。这等事例虽不少，只是可遇而不可求。

　　比如，“长城”在英文中是“The Great Wall”，意为“了不起的墙”。这一译名由来已久，出自谁手已不可考，但足可见译者对长城这一意象的深刻领悟。虽称“城”，其实却是一堵厚实的墙;虽称“长”，着意却在绵延千万里的雄伟。

　　又如“紫禁城”，其名借喻紫微星坛。因紫微垣居于中天，是天帝所居，故有“紫微正中”之说。然而“紫”字在英文中无此含义，若加注释性定语，则译名必定冗长。于是，译者只取“禁”字的“皇家重地，闲杂人等不得入内”之意，翻译成“Forbidden City”，令人叫绝!
