Teaching Aims:

1.Learn the new grammar: The Infinitive.

2. Get the ss to master some useful expressions.

3. Encourage the Ss to train their abilities of listening , writing, and speaking.

4.Get the ss to know something about Thomas Alva from reading the passage: The man who never gave up.

5. Help the Ss know if they want to succeed, they should never give up.

Lesson 25.

Properties: Recorder, overhead projector; pictures and some real objects

Language focus:

Useful expressions: fix; nearly; keep doing sth; change the world; be able to do; try to do something; need to do something; give up.

The Infinitive: I’m trying to get it to write more quickly.

We just need to keep working on it and not to give up.

Teaching Procedures:

Ⅰ. Showing aims:

1. Master some useful expressions.

2. Learn the grammar: the Infinitive.

3. Make up their own dialogues.

4. Discuss the usage of the Infinitive.

Ⅱ. Revision

1.Check homework.

2.Revise some words of the inventions. Show the ss some pictures. Ask the Ss the question: What’s this? Get the Ss to answer the question correctly, then Ss practise “ ask and answer” in pairs, using The Present Perfect Tense, and choose several pairs to perform their dialogues.

Ask : Do you think it’s useful for you? Do you have one? Do you want to have one? See if the SS can know the inventions.

Ⅲ.Presentation

Have the SS take out a pen, and ask them to have a dictation. The teacher should ask as quickly as possible. Ask the SS if they can write down. If they answer they can’t. Ask What they want most. They may answer with: I want a pen, it can write quickly. Then make the SS make up a dialogue in pairs, and ask some pairs to share with the class.

Ⅳ.Read and say:

Speech cassette. Ask : What does David want to do? Play the tape for the class to listen and find the best answers by themselves. Check the answers with the whole class. Make sure they can answer correctly. Answer: He wants to make a pen that has a machine in it. Play the tape again fot the Ss to repeat.

Ask the students to make up a similar dialogue, and share with the class.

Ⅴ.Practise:

Read the dialogue in pairs. Have some of the SS read it for the class. Explain: try to do sth; need to do sth; ( Here “ to do sth” the Infinitive is used to be an object.)

Ⅵ. Ask and answer:

1. Look at the picture on Page31. Have the ss ask and answer in pairs and write down the answers. Get some SS to share their answers in the class.

2. Get the Ss to make a riddle about each of the inventions and ask the others to guess what it is.

Ⅶ. Workbook:

1. Do Exx 1 orally in pairs. Have the Ss ask and answer in pairs.

2. Do Exx 2 in the exercise books. Have the s do it by themselves, then discuss in pairsⅧ.Summary.

Homework:

1. Finish the exercises in the workbook..

Lesson 26.

Properties: Recorder, overhead projector; pictures and some real objects

Language focus:

Useful expressions: give up; a great American inventor; try out new ideas; no matter; have nothing to do with…; build…for…; become interested in; at the age of; too…to…; open up.

No matter how hard it was, he never gave up.

The boy’s father was so thankful that he taught Edison how to send messages by telegraph.

Teaching Procedures:

Ⅰ. Showing aims:

1. Master some useful expressions and understand some difficult sentences..

2. Read the passage, try to do some reading comprehension.

3. Get the ss to know something about Thomas Alva from reading the passage: The man who never gave up.

4. Do some reading comprehension.

Ⅱ. Revision:

1.Check homework.

Revise Lesson 25. Practise the dialogue of Lesson 21 in front of the class.

Revise some inventions. Have the Ss discuss it in groups of four, then get some groups to give out their ideas.

Give some riddles for the SS to guess what they are. See if they can remember the words.

Ⅲ. Pre-read

Show the Ss a picture of Thomas Alva Edison. Ask them who he is. In small groups, get the Ss to discuss the questions.

Get the Ss ask and answer in pairs.

Ⅳ.Read:

Speech cassette. Ask : Who was Thomas Alva Edison.? How many inventions did he have? What kind of spirit did he have? Play the tape for the Ss to listen and try to find the answers to the questions. Check the answers with the class.

Get the Ss to practise the dialogue in pairs. Give them a few minutes for them to discuss, then ask some of the SS to give their reports to share with the class.

Explain the useful expressions: try out; have nothing to do with; can be explained in Chinese.

Ⅴ.Practise:

Have the ss make sentences with the useful expressions, see if they use them freely.

Try out; He was trying out new ideas.

No matter: No matter how hard it was, he never gave up.

Have nothing to do with: His questions had nothing to do with his lessons.

Then play the tape again for the Ss to repeat.

Ask the SS to listen carefully. Then stop the tape while the SS are listening, and ask them to go on reading. It can test the SS’ abilities to follow the passage as it is read on the tape.

Read the passage individually and find the answers to following questions:

Discuss the questions in pairs. Then ask and answer.

Book closed. Have the SS discuss: Thomas Alva Edison in small groups. Get the SS to introduce him in front of the class, saying sth about his inventions and his spirit.

Ⅵ. Discuss:

Ask: What kind of spirit do you have in your study? Have the ss discuss in small groups. Then write down theirown answers. One of each group gives out their report. and get them to write down their ideas in the exercise books.

Ⅶ. Workbook:

1.Do Exx 2 orally in class. Have the Ss read the dialogue in pairs, then check in class. And write down their own ideas in the exercise books. The answers are: 1T 2.F 3. F 4. T 5. F 6. T

2. Do Exx 3, first orally, then do it as homework.

Lesson 27.

Properties: Recorder, overhead projector; pictures and some real objects

Language focus:

Useful expressions:turn down; want to do sth; hope to do sth; tell sb to do ath; ask sb to do sth.

The Infinitive: Let me tell you to turn it down.

Let me ask him to speak more slowly.

Teaching Procedures:

Ⅰ. Showing aims:

1.Master some useful expressions.

2.Go on revising the grammar: the Infinitive, try to use the following drills freely:

Ask him to try harder,please. Have the SS to make some sentences to master the Infinitive.

3.Make up their own dialogues.

Ⅱ. Revision:

1.Check homework;

2.Revise the passage of Lesson 26. First get the Ss to ask and answer some questions about the passage, see if they can understand the passage correctly. Get one of them to retell it.

3. Ask the SS to make some sentences to master the Infinitive.

Have some of the Ss give their answers in class.

Ⅲ.Presentation1:

Divide the class into small groups. Ask: What do you want to do after you graduate from school? Have the ss discuss in groups. Help them answer with: I want to be…; I hope to…; I plan to… Ask some of them answer the questions.

Ⅳ.Practice:

Practise this drills in pairs:

A: What do you want to do after r you graduate from school?

B: I want to go to Beijing University.

Get some pairs to share their ideas with the class.

Ⅴ.Read and say:

Turn on the radio loudly. Get the students to ask the teacher to turn it down.

Speech cassette. Play the tape for the Ss to listen and repeat. Then in pairs, have the Ss read and act the dialogue, ask several pair to perform the dialogue for the class. See if the ss can answer correctly

Explain: ask/tll sb to do sth. ( Here infinitive is used to be OC)

Book open. Play the tape again, and get the Ss to repeat after the tape.

Ⅵ. Practice :

T: Open the door.

S1: What did the teacher say?

S2: The teacher told you to open the door.

Play the game in class, see if the ss can use” tell /ask sb to do sth” freely and correctly.

Practise the dialogue in pairs. Have the Ss practise the dialogue in pairs, then ask some SS to act them out in class.

Ⅶ. Ask and answer:

Have the SS ask and answer in pairs. Get the ss to discuss more about Edison. Make up questions and get the others to answer with: He wanted to…or He began to…

Ⅷ. Invent something:

In small groups, make up an idea, and discuss some ways of making it work. Write something about how to invent it.

Ⅸ. Workbook:

1.Do Exx 1 orally with the whole class. Discuss the answers with the partner,and finish the dialogue. Have two students read the dialogue in pairs, then check the answers in class.

2.Do Exx 3 as homework., then write down the sentences.

Ⅹ. Summary.

Homework:

Finish the exercises in the workbook..

Read the dialogue and make similar dialogues.

Lesson 28.

Properties: Recorder, overhead projector; pictures and some real objects

Language focus:

Useful expressions: Some Infinitive phrases: want to do sth; start to do sth; learn to do sth.

Teaching Procedures:

Ⅰ. Showing aims:

1.Master some Infinitive phrases.

2.Revise all the contents of Unit 7.

3.To train their listening and writing abilities.

4. Go through Checkpoint7.

5. Write a short passage to train the SS’ writing abilities.

Ⅱ. Revision:

1.Check homework.

2.Revise the useful expressions, give out some useful expressions, have the Ss make sentences with the Infinitive phraes.

Make sure the Ss can ask and answer correctly.

3. Revise the Infinitive: have the Ss make sentences using the Infinitive. Get the ss to discuss in groups. Make sure the Ss can use the Infinitive correctly.

Make dialogue in pairs:

A: What do you want to do after you graduate from school?

B: I want to be a teacher, and how about you?

A: I plan to be a doctor as my father.

Ⅲ.Listen

Listening cassette. Go through the Ex1 in WB with the Ss. Play the tape for the ss to listen and finish Ex 1 in WB . Play the tape again, Get the SS to check their answers. Then check with the whole class. Make sure that they can understand.

Ex2. in the Wb. Listening cassette. Get the ss to listen and repeat after the tape, pay attention to the sound of the letters.

Ⅳ.Match and write:

Part2. Have the ss match the Infinitive with the adverbs in the box individually. Then check the answers with the whole class.

Ⅴ.Presentation:

Look and role-play. Make a telephone call with a student. Get one student to work with the teacher as an example.

A: Hello, could I speak to Ann, please?

B: Hello, this is Ann speaking. Is that Jim?

A: Yes, could you bring your English book to school for me?

S: Certainly.

Then get all the SS to work in pairs. Have some pairs work in front of the class.

Ⅵ.Read and act:

Speech cassette. Ask : What is wrong with Ann’s radio? What did Ann ask Tina to do? Play the tape for the Ss to listen and repeat, and try to find the answer: (It’s broken. Ann asked Tina to bring her radio to school. )

Books open, read the dialogue in pairs. Get some pairs to read and then ask one pair to share with the class without looking at the books.

Ⅶ.Checkpoint7:

Go through Checkpoint 7 with the Ss. Solve any problems that the Ss may have. Make sentences with the useful expressions, and make sure that the Ss can use them freely. Get the Ss to go over the grammar notes.

Ⅷ. Workbook:

1. Do Exx 3 orally in class. Do it in Ex book. Pay attention to the stress.

2. Do Exx 4-5with the Ss in class. Practise the dialogue in pairs. The answers are: CEBAD

3. Do Ex 5 as homework.
