1.-You haven't been to Beijing,have you?

-_____.How I wish to go there!

A.Yes,I have B.Yes,I haven't

C.No,I have D.No,I haven't

2.Hello,I _____ you _____ in London. How long have you been here?

A.don't know;were B.hadn't known;are

C.haven't known;are D.didn't know;were

How long have you been here? Mathilde! Oh,yes.Sorry,I didn't recognize you.Where have you been all these years./Oh,this book is new to me,but I thought I had read it before./Smith has just arrived, but I didn't think he would come until tomorrow.

【答案】 D

3.-I drove to Zhuhai for the air show last week.

-Is that _____ you had a few days off?

A.why B.when

C.what D.where

It's raining heavily.That's why I have to stay at home./Is that why you did it?

【答案】 A

4.They have made up their minds to ring the bells nonstop for two weeks as a protest against heavy trucks which run _____ through the narrow High Street.

A.now and then B.day and night

C.up and down D.over and over

now and then时而,不时地;day and night夜以继日地;up and down来回地;over and over反复地,再三地。

5.Try _____ at the back door if nobody answers you at the front door.

A.to knock B.to be knocking

C.knocking D.having knocked

try to do sth. I tried to stand on my head but couldn't./I tried standing on my head but it gave me a headache.

An American woman Anna Jarvis was the first person to decide that mothers should have a holiday in their honour each year. Miss Jarvis started her campaign(战役) in 1906 in her home city Philadelphia. She wrote thousands of letters to congressmen(国会议员), city officials, teachers and newspaper publishers, proposing(提议) an official holiday for mothers. She travelled all over America, trying to get support(支持) for the idea. Her battle went on for years.

In 1914 the Congress declared(宣布) the second Sunday in May each year as Mother's Day. Anna Jarvis wanted Mother's Day to be a simple event. Cornelia's Jewels

It was a bright morning in the old city of Rome many hundred years ago.In a vine-covered summer house in a beautiful garden, two boys were standing. They were looking at their mother and her friend, who were walking among the flowers and trees.

“Did you ever see so handsome a lady as our mother's friend?”asked the younger boy, holding his tall brother's hand.“She looks like a queen.”

“Yet she is not so beautiful as our mother,”said the elder boy.“She has a fine dress,it is true;but her face is not noble and kind.It is our mother who is like a queen.”

“That is true,”said the other,“there is no woman in Rome so much like a queen as our own dear mother.”

Soon Cornelia, their mother, came down the walk to speak with them. She was simply dressed in a plain white robe. Her arms and feet were bare,as was the custom in those days;and no rings nor chains glittered about her hands and neck. For her only crown, long braids of soft brown hair were coiled about her head;and a tender smile lit up her noble face as she looked into her sons' proud eyes.“Boys,”she said,“I have something to tell you.”

They bowed before her,as Roman lads were taught to do,and said,“What is it,mother?”

“You are to dine with us today, here in the garden;and then our friend is going to show us that wonderful casket of jewels of which you have heard so much.”

The brothers looked shyly at their mother's friend. Was it possible that she had still other rings besides those on her fingers?Could she have other gems besides those which sparkled in the chains about her neck?

When the simple out-door meal was over,a servant brought the casket from the house. The lady opened it.Ah,how those jewels dazzled the eyes of the wondering boys! There were ropes of pearls, white as milk, and smooth as satin;heaps of shining rubies, red as the glowing coals;sapphires as blue as the sky of that summer day;and diamonds that flashed and sparkled like the sunlight.

The brothers looked long at the gems.

“Ah!”whispered the younger;“if our mother could only have such beautiful things!”

At last, however, the casket was closed and carried carefully away.

“It is true,Cornelia, that you have no jewels?”asked her friend.“Is it true,as I have heard it whispered, that you are poor?”

“No,I am not poor,”answered Cornelia, and as she spoke she drew her two boys to her side;“for here are my jewels. They are worth more than all your gems.”

I am sure that the boys never forgot their mother's pride and love and care;and after years, when they had become great men in Rome, they often thought of thiss cene in the garden. And the world still likes to hear the story of Cornelia's jewels.
