Lesson 37

Step 1 Revision

Draw a family tree on the Bb. Say This is the Brown family.

Revise father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister. Present this dialogue:

A: Who is Jenny?

B: She's Mr and Mrs Brown's daughter, and Tim's sister.

Ask about all the members of the family and help the Ss to answer.

Step 2 Presentation

Give more details about each person. Mr Brown is 52 years old. He is a doctor. He works in a hospital. Get the Ss to guess the meaning of doctor. Note the details on the family tree on the Bb, like this:

Mr Brown + Mrs Brown

hospital

Repeat for the other family members. (Mrs Brown: 50, bookseller, bookshop; Jenny, 29, teacher, middle school; Tim, 25, policeman, police station. )

Ask about the Brown family: How old is ...? What does ...do? Where does... work?

Help the Ss to answer.

Ask What do the children call the brother of Mr Brown or Mrs Brown? Help the Ss to answer Uncle. Ask What about the sister of Mr or Mrs Brown? Teach the word aunt.

Step 3 Practice

SB page 37, Part 1. Practise the dialogue with the class. Look at Picture 1. Do the factory worker dialogue with the Ss as a model. Remind the Ss that 工人 is usually translated as factory worker, not just worker in English.

Then Ss work in pairs on the other dialogues.

Do Wb Lesson 37, Ex .1 orally in class.

Step 4 Presentation

Present this dialogue:

A: Excuse me, Tim. Where does your sister work?

B: In a middle school.

A: What does she do?

B: She teaches English.

Practise the dialogue with the class. Then say: Excuse me, Tim. Where does your mother work?

Help the Ss to answer, e.g. In a bookshop/She sells books.

Step 5 Read and say

SB page 37, Part 2. Read through the model dialogue with the Ss. Then look at the choices. Let the Ss guess the meaning of the new words. Do another dialogue with the class, then let them practise in pairs.

Ask some Ss about their own families: How many people are there in your family? Where does your mother/ father/ brother/ sister work? What does he/she do? Does he/ she like his/ her work? etc.

Step 6 Workbook

Wb Lesson 37, Exx. 2-4.

Do Exx. 2 and 3 orally with the whole class. In Ex. 2, get the Ss to give you the Chinese for play and player, etc. This exercise shows that many English verbs can be changed into nouns by adding er or r to them.

For Ex. 4, if there is time, go through the questions with the class, then let the Ss ask and answer in pairs. Get some Ss to report their partner's answers.

Homework

Do Wb Lesson 37, Ex. 1 in the exercise books.

Lesson 39

Step 1 Revision

Ask the Ss to tell you as much as they can remember about the Brown family and Bill Smith.

Practise the dialogue in SB page 38, Part 2. Then get the Ss to pretend they come from the USA, from a place on the map in SB page 38,Part 1. Get the Ss to practise the dialogue again, changing the details, using the places on SB page38. Ask some pairs to act out their dialogues.

Step 2 Presentation

SB page 39,Part1. Look at the picture and ask What can you see? Discuss how to use a lift.

Say The lift is on the first floor. I need to go to the tenth floor. What do I do? I press the number ten. The door door closes. The lift goes up to the tenth floor. The door opens. I get out of the lift. I use the lift to go up and down.

(Teacher's reference only!)Explain that, in British English, ground floor is the same as first floor in American English, and the British first floor is the American second floor and so on. It is probably inadvisable to try to explain this to the student.

Step 3 Reading

Let the Ss read the passage quickly and silently to find the answer to the question in the introduction. Then they read the passage more slowly. Ss work in pairs to ask and answer the questions at the foot of the passage. Briefly go through the passage with the Ss and explain any difficulties. Get them to guess the meaning of any new words. Discuss the reason why John doesn't use the lift for the last three floors.

(The reason may be: John wants to take some exercise. OR likes climbing. Maybe he's too short to reach the button for the fifteenth floor!)Speech Cassette Lesson 39. Let the Ss listen to the tape and then read after the recording.(Do not spend too long on this activity.)Please note that it is pointless to ask the students to read a passage aloud before they have understood it.

Step 4 Workbook

Wb Lesson 39, Ex. 1. Ss work alone, then check the answers in pairs. Finally, check the answers with the whole class. Sentences 1, 3, 4 are right. The others are wrong.

Step 5 Listening

Wb Lesson 39, Ex.2. Play the tape three times ifnecessary. Check the answers.

Listening text:

Open your workbook at page 39. You can see apicture of part of John's building in Toronto. In John's building in Toronto, there are many different people.

Which floor do they live on? What are their names? Where do they come from? Listen carefully and write in the answers in your workbook.

Model: On the first floor there is Mr Green. He is English.

On the second floor there is Mr King . Mr king is working in Toronto. He is a teacher. He is American.

On the third floor there is Zhang Ming. ZhangMing is studying in Canada. He is Chinese. The fourth floor is empty.

On the fifth floor there is Mrs Brown. Mrs Brown works in an office. She is Canadian.

On the sixth floor there is Bill Black. Bill Black isa worker in a car factory. He is a Canadian, too.

The answers are: 2 second, teacher, American;3 Zhang Ming, is studying, Chinese; 4 fourth, empty; 5 there is Mrs Brown, works in an office, Canadian; 6 there is Bill Black, worker, car.

Step 6 Quiz

Wb Lesson 39, Ex.3 is optional. Call out four Ss to write one sentence about a place on the Bb. Check the answers with the class. Encourage the Ss to Write more sentences, like It is a very big city. There are a lot of people in it. It is very far from China. etc. If time permits, ask more questions about towns and cities in China: ask In which province is Hang zhou? Name the biggest city in Sichuan, etc.

Homework

Read the passage again carefully.

Revise the new words and structures in this unit.

Step1 Revision

Books closed! Ask the following questions about the passage on SB page 39, Part 1 to see how much the Ss can remember.

Where does John come from?

In which city does he live?

Does he live in a tall building?

How does he go up and down?

How does he usually go to work?

Which bus does he usually take?

Where does he work?

When does he start work?

When does his work finish?

What time does he get home?

Step 2 Word families

SB page 40, Part 1. Speech Cassette Lesson 40.Play the tape for the Ss to listen and repeat.

Practise the individual sounds, then show flashcards randomly and get the Ss to pronounce the words written on them. Pay particular attention to the pronunciation of consonant clusters, such as/sp-/,/st-/,etc.

Step 3 Presentation

1 Revise the vocabulary and dialogues on SB page 38.

2 Draw a large shaded area on the Bb. Say This is London. Is it a village? No, it's a city.

Jenny Brown lives in London. She lives in the middle of the city. Put an“X”in the middle of the shaded area on the Bb.

3 Draw a small area outside the city. Say This is the village of West End. Tim Brown lives here. He lives in a small village outside the city.

4 Practise She lives in the middle of the city and He lives in a small village outside the city.

Step 4 Read and act

SB page 40, Part 2. Speech Cassette Lesson 40.Books closed. Play the tape for the Ss to listen and repeat. Then books open. Read through the dialogue, then get the Ss to make up their own dialogues. Ask some to act theirs out.

Step 5 Workbook

Wb Lesson 40, Exx. 2 and 3. For Ex. 2, ask and answer about the people in the table. ForEx.3, every student asks several friends and write down their answers. Get some Ss to report their friends' answers.

Step 6 Checkpoint 10

Go through Checkpoint 10 in the usual way and discuss any problems that the Ss may raise.

Step 7 Test

Write this table on the Bb:

Li Mei Wang He

sells books makes machines

likes it very much doesn't like it at all

Get the Ss to write two dialogues between Samand Lin Tao about Li Mei and Wang He, usingWhere…? What…? Does…?

Step 8 Workbook

Wb Lesson 40, Ex.1 can be done in class.

The answers are: Ss, pp, rr, tt. Tell the Ss the meaning of the word letter.

Homework

Ex.4 may be done in writing as homework.

Finish off the Workbook exercises.
