Teaching Steps for SEFC Book 1A

Unit 1 The summer holidays

Lesson 3

Step 1 Revision

1 Check the homework exercises.

2 Revise Charlie's letter (books closed, if you wish). Ask some questions to guide the Ss:

What did Charlie do in the summer holiday? Was it easy? What did he do on Saturdays? What did he ask Li Xiaojun ? etc.

Step 2 Language study

Ask the Ss What questions can you ask a new student? Collect their suggestions on the Bb. SB Lesson 3, Part 1. Get the Ss to change these reported questions into direct questions. Note them on the Bb:

Where do you live? Which school were you at last year? Where did you go for your holiday? Did you see any good films? Did you buy any new books? What were you doing at this time last week? Are you doing computer studies this term? What are you going to do next Sunday? What are you doing after school today?

This exercise gives you a chance to deal with any problems that the Ss might have in forming questions.

Notes:

a Are you doing computer studies? Present Continuous Tense for present time.

b What are you doing after school today? Present Continuous Tense for future time. Although this tense is not a syllabus item, it is extremely common in English. It is dealt with briefly in Unit 4 (Travel).

Step 3 Oral Practice

Ask individual Ss some of the questions, then let the Ss ask and answer in pairs. Finally, get some Ss to report their partners' answers to the whole class.

Step 4 Dialogue

SB Lesson 3, Part 2. Play the tape of the dialogue for the Ss to listen and follow. Then play the tape again. This time the Ss listen and repeat. Divide the class into two groups for further practice, then let the Ss practise it in pairs. Get the Ss to make up similar dialogues, using their own names. Ask some pairs to act out their dialogues in front of the class. If you wish, point out the way to end a conversation in English. Usually we give a signal by saying / must be off/ leaving now before we say goodbye.

Note:

I must be leaving now. = I must go now. Teach this item as a set phrase, not as a grammatical item.

Step 5 Practice

SB Lesson 3, Part 3. Go through the different expressions for sending good wishes. Love should only be used for family members or very close friends. Best wishes and regards are friendly, but not intimate. Do one or two examples with individual Ss and then let the class practise the first dialogue in pairs. The second dialogue shows how to pass the message to the third person. Do one or two examples with the whole class. Make sure they use the appropriate pronouns (his and him for Harry and Steve; her for Jane, Mary, Tang Lin and Zhou Lan). Then let the Ss practise briefly in pairs. If you wish, let them work in groups. They can ask their partners to send their regards/ best wishes to another group member.

Step 6 Workbook

Wb Lesson 3, Exx. 1, 2 and 3.

For Ex. 1, divide the class into groups and see which group can ask more questions than the others.

Get the Ss to go over Ex. 2 before they write down the answers. Check the answers with the whole class.

Do Ex. 3 orally in class.

Homework

Finish the Workbook exercises.

Write down the six questions for Ex. 1 and the answers to the questions in Ex. 3.
