开篇的“寻寻觅觅”反映词人心中若有所失的精神状态。环境孤寂，心情空虚，无可排遣寄托，就像有什么东西丢掉了一样。这东西，可能是流亡以前的生活，可能是丈夫在世的爱情。这种心情，有点近似姜爱的所谓“人间别久不成悲”。这，就不能不使人产生一种“寻寻觅觅”的心思来。心中若有所失，要想抓住一点什么，结果却什么也得不到，所得到的仍只是空虚，这才如梦初醒，感到“冷冷清清”。此既明指环境，也暗指心情，或者说，由环境而感染到心倩，由外而内。接着“凄凄惨惨戚戚”，则纯属内心感觉的描绘。由冷清的环境过渡到惨戚的心灵。开头王句，由浅入深，文情并茂地描写出女主人公寂苦无告的凄凉心境。“乍暖”两句，本应说由于环境不佳，心情很坏，身体也就觉得难以适应。然而这里不说境之冷清，心之惨戚，而独归之于天气之“乍暖还寒”。接下来，说借酒浇愁，言谈酒不足以敌急风。其实，这仍是开头三句的延伸。所谓情在词外。“雁过也”三句，将上文含情未说之事略加点明。正是此时，一群征雁掠过高空，在急风、淡酒、愁绪难消的情景中，它们的摹然闯入，不是喜，却是“伤心”。“旧时相识”在异乡相逢，使得这种种情债汇集一起，就更增加了词人的天涯沦落之感。
过片直承上文。仰望则天空过雁，俯视则满地残花。菊花曾经开得极其茂盛，在枝头堆积起来，然而，现在却已憔摔了。在往年，一定要在它盛开时搞来戴在头上，而今，谁又有这种兴致呢？看到花的惟淬，想到了自己，正是愁上加愁。急风欺人，淡酒无用，雁逢旧识，菊惹新愁。“守着窗儿，独自怎生得黑？”孤孤单单地靠着窗儿，怎样才能挨到天黑呢？真是苦到了极点。黄昏尚且难熬，那么漫漫长夜又将如何度过呢？一紧接着，梧桐叶落，秋色愁人，细雨靡靡，更添愁绪。这里将凄凉的`景色与痛苦的心情交融在一起了，使词的意境更为深远。
最后一句，总括上文，是说在“愁”之外另有一层深意：“这次第，怎一个愁字了得!”“‘这次第”三字极其有力，一笔收住，总括上述种种情景;“怎一个愁字了得”又放开一步，开拓出一种含蓄的境界，让人想象，发人深思。词人满纸呜咽，笔笔写愁这里除了悲欢离合、春忧秋愁一类私愁外，更有时代的、民族的、国家的“公”愁在。
