[辨析] appear, seem & look

(1)appear是根据事物的表面现象而提出的判断,暗含事实往往并非如此之意;

look指凭视觉印象而作出的判断,实际上也可能如此。

(2)seem是指暗含有一定根据,往往接近事实的判断。它后面可以接名词、形容词、to be 结构,可以互换。

(3)look, seem之后可接like短语,而appear不能,look可以用进行时,但appear, seem不能; look seem可以接as if (though)从句,而appear不能;appear, seem之后可接that从句,而look不能;appear, seem之后可接to do sth. 结构,而look不能; appear, seem 可用于there引导的结构中, 而look不能。

e.g. The green leaves appeared/looked/seemed to be more beautiful after the rain.

It seems like years since I last met you.

She is looking quite a different person.

It looks/seems as if he knew nothing about his new friend.

It appears/seems that we have missed our chance.

There seems/appears to be a mistake in these figures.
