Teaching Aims:

1.Go on the new grammar: The Active Voice and the Passive Voice in the Past Tense with must/ should/ can/ may.

2. Get the ss to master some useful expressions.

3. Through reading the text, let the SS understand the importance of planting trees and learn how to plant a tree.

Lesson 41.

Properties: Recorder, overhead projector; pictures and some real objects

Language focus:

Useful expressions: neither…nor.., tie… to… ; must; should.

Teaching Procedures:

Ⅰ. Showing aims:

1. Master some useful expressions.

2. Learn the grammar: The Active Voice and the Passive Voice in the Past Tense.

3. Learn how to plant a tree.

Ⅱ. Revision

1.Check homework.

2.Revise The Active Voice and the Passive Voice .Get the Ss to answer the question correctly, then Ss practise “ ask and answer” in pairs, using a The Active Voice and the Passive Voice and choose several pairs to perform their dialogues. Get the Ss to make up a dialogue in pairs and then share the dialogue in class.

Ⅲ.Presentation

Tell the SS that there are four seasons in a year. They are spring , summer, autumn and winter. Most people like spring. Because we can see trees and flowers. March 12th is Planting Day. What will happen if Planting Day comes?

Get the SS to listen to the tape, try to find the answers.

Play the tape for the class to listen and find the best answers by themselves. Check the answers with the whole class. Make sure they can answer correctly. See if the SS can make sentences with them. Play the tape again fot the Ss to repeat.

Ask the students to make up a similar dialogue, and share with the class.

Ⅳ.Read and say:

Just get the SS to to understand the reading, do not pay more attention to the new knowledge. Look at the books, read the instruction with the whole class. Explain: just right, neither…nor.

Read the the passage “ How To Plant A Tree” and answer the question at the bottom of the page with the whole class.

Ⅴ.Practise:

Get the SS to listen to the reading. Then read after the tape, ask the class to read it by themselves. Choose some of the SS to read in class.

Ⅵ.Teaching Language Focus:

Remind the SS of the instructions using “ must” and “ should”. Draw this table on the BB.

The ground must

The tree must not

Get the Ss to make up sentences using those phrases in the box. Pay attention to the followings. Let the ss really understand them:

1.Neither: Neither answer is right. Neither of his parents is a teacher.

Note: neither… nor…

Neither Tom nor Jane is from America.

Neither you nor I am right.

2.tie…to…

Tie the tree to the top of the stick to keep it straight.

Tie the cat to the door to keep it quiet.

3.so that

He gets up early every day so that he can get to school on time.

Anna studied very hard so that she could catch up with the class.

Ask the Ss to make up sentences with the words: so that, neither… nor.. ; tie to.

Ⅷ.Workbook:

1. Do Exx 1 orally in pairs. Have the Ss ask and answer in pairs. Check the answers with the whole class. The answers are:

1) plant, shall, dig, get/carry, help;

2) enough, right;

3) put, sure, earth.

2. Do Exx 2 in the exercise books. Have the ss do it by themselves, then discuss in pairs.

Summary.

Homework:

Finish the exercises in the workbook..

Make up a new dialogue.

Ask the Ss to write a passage about how to plant a flower.

Lesson 42.

Properties: Recorder, overhead projector; pictures and some real objects

Language focus:

Useful expressions: keep…from doing sth; stop…from doing sth, the more, the better.

Teaching Procedures:

Ⅰ. Showing aims:

1. Master some useful expressions and understand some difficult sentences..

2. Read the passage, try to do some reading comprehension.

3. Do some reading comprehension.

Ⅱ. Revision:

1.Check homework.

Revise Lesson 41. Practise the instruction of Lesson 41 in front of the class.

Revise the Passive Voice in the Past Tense. Have the Ss make sentences in groups of four, then get some groups to give out their ideas.

Ⅲ. Presentation:

Ask the SS to look at the pictures and tell them that it’s about the Great Wall. There are many trees- forest just like a wall to protect something. Ask: Do you know why the Great Green Wall was built? Let the SS discuss it first. Then open the workbook, look at Ex. 1. Read through the questions first, let the SS read the passage quickly and answer the questions in the Workbook orally. After that, give them correct instructions. Ask them to find the answers in pairs.

Play the tape, get the SS to listen and read after the tape sentence by sentence.

Then ask two or three Ss to read the passage for the class.

Ⅳ. Teaching Language Focus:

Explain some useful expressions in the passage. Let the SS understand them.

1) Stop…from doing something:

She stopped me from telling the secret to her parents.

We must stop him from doing such a thing.

2) Among the young trees

“ Among” is used for more than two; between is used for two.

3) The more, the better;

The more trees we plant, the better the environment will be.

4) Point to and point at.

Ⅴ. Read:

Speech cassette. Play the tape for the Ss to listen and try to find the answers to the questions. Check the answers with the class.

Books open. Get the Ss to read the passage in pairs. Give them a few minutes for them to discuss, then ask some of the SS to give their reports to share with the class.

Ⅵ.Ⅶ. Practice:

Have the ss make sentences with the useful expressions, See if they use them freely.

Then play the tape again for the Ss to repeat.

Ask the SS to listen carefully. Then stop the tape while the SS are listening, and ask them to go on reading. It can test the SS’ abilities to follow the passage as it is read on the tape.

Read the passage individually and help them to retell the story.

Workbook:

Do Exx 2 orally in class. Write down the answers as quickly as they can. Have the Ss read the dialogue in pairs, then check in class. And write down their own ideas in the exercise books.

Do Ex 3. in class. The answers are: built, across, long, wide, from, sand, towards, farmland.

Learn how to measurement and the Passive Voice with modal auxiliaries.

Teaching Procedures:

Ⅰ. Showing aims:

1.Master some useful expressions.

2.Go on revising the grammar: the Passive Voice with modal auxiliaries( can, may, must, should).

Ⅱ. Revision:

1.Check homework;

2.Revise the passage of Lesson 42. First get the Ss to ask and answer some questions about the passage, see if they can understand the passage correctly. Get one of them to retell it. Try to use the drills freely:

Have the SS to make some sentences to master the Passive Voice with modal auxiliaries. Make up some sentences.

Ask some SS to read their sentences. Then ask some of them to read them out to the SS.

Ⅲ.Presentation:

Let the SS look at the following sentences. Pay attention to the underlined words:

1) Peter is one meter seventy tall.

2) The room is ten meters long.

3) The window is 3 meters wide.

4) The hill is 500 meters high.

5) The well is 4 meters deep.

Ask the SS to tell the structure. Point out the position of the adjective at the end of the sentence again.

Ⅳ. Practice:

Do Ex 1. in the workbook. Read through the phrases in the boxes, and make up true sentences by themselves. Divide the class into small groups. Have the ss to share their sentences in groups. Ask some of them to share with the whole class. Pay attention to the positions of the adjectives.

Ⅴ. Presentation:

Revise the instruction for planting trees, using “ should” and “ must”.

( not + be + past participle) Then tell the SS that we can use the Passtive Voice in the same way. Give the SS some examples:

1. The homework must be done.

2. The fish must be cooked.

3. The book should be returned tomorrow.

4. The tree must be tied to the stick.

5. The hole must be dug first.

Get them to repeat the sentences. Point out the use of must/ should + Passive Voice. Then help the SS change the sentences into the Active Voice and make sure they can understand the difference between the Active and the Passive Voice.

For instance:

We should plant many more trees.( Active)

Many more trees should be planted.( Passive)

The passive is used when it is not necessary to mention the doer of the action.

Ⅵ. Practice:

Get the SS to make up sentences using the words in the box. Do Ex 2 and 3. First do the first one as an example, then let the SS work in pairs to make up sentences. Collect some examples from the whole class.

Workbook:

1.Do Exx 1 orally with the whole class. Discuss the answers with the partner,and finish the dialogue. Have two students read the dialogue in pairs, then check the answers in class.

2. Do Exx 2 as homework., then write down the sentences. The answers are:

1) think

2) long, wide, wide

3) deep, deep

4) high/tall, high/ tall

5) tall

3. Do Ex 3. Ask the SS to fill the blanks quickly. The answers are: Be, made, long, wide, through, stopped, warm, more, all, in.

Lesson 44.

Teaching Procedures:

Ⅰ. Showing aims:

1. Train the SS’ listening ability.

2.Revise all the contents of Unit 11.

3.To train their listening and writing abilities.

4.Go through Checkpoint11.

5.Write a short passage to train the SS’ writing abilities.

Ⅱ. Revision:

1.Check homework.

2. Revise the Passive Voice with “ should” and “ must”. Have the Ss make sentences using the Passive Voice with “ should” and “ must” Get the ss to discuss in groups. Make sure the Ss can use the Passive Voice with “ should” and “ must”.

Ⅲ.Listen

Listening cassette. Go through the Ex1 in WB with the Ss. Play the tape for the ss to listen and finish Ex 1 in WB . Play the tape again, Get the SS to check their answers. Then check with the whole class. Make sure that they can understand.

Ex2. in the Wb. Listening cassette. Get the ss to listen and repeat after the tape.

Ⅳ.Dialogues:

Listen to the dialogues, then repeat after the tape. Get the Ss to practise the dialogue in pairs. Then get them to act it out in class.

Ⅴ.Read and act

Let the SS open the books and read the dialogue more carefully and answer the questions. Then check the answers with the SS. Play the tape for the sS to listen and repeat, then read it in pairs. Explain some language points. Ask the SS to practise this dialogue in pairs without looking at the books.

Ⅵ. .Presentation:

Part 3. Get the SS to write down their answers into the table and report to the class.

Checkpoint 11.

Go through Checkpoint 11 with the Ss. Solve any problems that the Ss may have. Make sentences with the useful expressions, and make sure that the Ss can use them freely. Get the Ss to go over the grammar notes.

Ⅷ. Workbook:

Do Exx 3 orally in class. Do it in Ex book. Pay attention to the stress. The answers are:

1) be grown, is grown, be harvested, be harvested;

2) be dug, have finished, dig, be finished.
