A.Useful expressions:

1. recogniz/se (not used in the continuous tenses) know sb/sth again

2. accept v. take sth offered willingly *refuse

receive v. get or take sth sent or given

3. after all = in spite of what has been said, done or expected 毕竟, 终究

She was married to a man with a lot of money.

*They've been married for 30 years.

5. call on sb = visit sb. call on sb. to do sth = appeal to sb to do sth

6. pretty adj. (esp. of a woman, a child, or a small thing) pleasing or nice to look

at, listen to, etc. charming but not beautiful or grand

She looks prettier with short hair than with long hair.

pretty adv. in some degree, rather, quite though not completely

My grandma is in her eighties, but she is still in pretty good health.

7. day and night

During the next ten years we both worked day and night to pay back the

money.

8. pay back/off = to return what one owes

Well, after all these years we've at last paid back all the money.

9. worth adj.

It was worth 500 francs at the most.

The place is worth a visit.

*I don't think this book is worth reading.

10. not ... any more = not any longer

On my way home that night I looked down and saw that the necklace was not

around my neck any more.

B. Sentence patterns:

1. I don't think I know you.

But I don't think we can go to the ball.

这是否定转移句。一般用于有礼貌地否定,使说法较为客气,把客观事

实说成主观意见。

如:He is a dishonest man. 为了减少贬义的直接说法,先把这句变为

He is not an honest man. 然后再变为 I don't think he is an honest man.
