1. Thanks very much. (= Thank you very much. )非常感谢。

口语中常说 Thank you. 或 Thanks。表示强调时才说 Thank you very much。

2. Thank you all the same. (你虽然不知道)还是要感谢你。又如:

A: Excuse me. What's the time, please?

B: I'm sorry I don't have a watch. You'd better ask Zhao Hui.

A: Thank you all the same.

3. look for寻找

What are you looking for? 你在找什么?

I'm looking for my ruler. 我在找我的尺子。

Who are you looking for? 你在找谁?

I'm looking for Lucy. 我在找露西。

4.walk along this road 沿着这条路走。along在这里是介词。

walk/ go along the street 顺着这条街走。

walk on along the road 顺着这条马路继续走。

5.It's about a hundred metres along on the right.

大约在前面右方100公尺处。

It's about two hundred metres along on the right.

大约前面右边200公尺左右的地方。

It's about one kilometre along from here. 在前面离这里大约一公里。

6. The nearest is about 4 kilometres away. 在课文中的意思是 The nearest police station is about 4 kilometres away. 最近的派出所离这里大约有4公里远。又如:

The train station is about 200 metres away from here.

火车站离这里大约有200公尺远。

问两地距离可以说:How far is the train station from here?

7.You'd better catch a bus. 你最好赶上一辆公共汽车。

You'd better …= You had better… 你最好……

I'm sorry I don't know. You'd better ask the teacher.

对不起,我不知道。你最好问老师。

It's getting late. You'd better go to bed. 天晚了,你最好睡觉去。

It's 5:30. You'd better go home. 五点半了,你最好回家吧。

8. First left, and second right. = Take the first turning on the left, and the second turning on the right. A重复B的话,不必全说,用缩略式。

教学步骤(Teaching steps)

Lesson 33

Step 1 Revision

1 Sing the One Finger song (Wb Lesson 32, Ex. 3).

2 Draw a simple map on the Bb, like this:

Say sentences such as The farm is behind the factory. The shop is next to the school. Usein front of and outside. Ask Where's the school? etc. Help the Ss to answer.

Step 2 Presentation

Teach hospital and draw one opposite the school, on the other side of the road . Teach bus stop and post office in the same way. Say The bus stop is opposite the shops, on the other side of the road . Teach opposite and get the Ss to use it when answering Where's the hospital/ bus stop/post office? etc.

Step 3 Practice

Ss ask and answer in pairs about the map on the Bb.

Step 4 Presentation

SB page 33, Part 1. Look at the picture and ask the class Where's the hospital? etc. Help the Ss to answer. Get the Ss to guess the meaning of new words (e. g. police station ) . Read the words in the box in SB Lesson 33, Part 1 and help the Ss with their pronunciation .

Then Ss ask and answer in pairs .

Step 5 Presentation

Present this dialogue, pointing to the map in Part 1 of the SB .

A: Excuse me. Where's the hospital?

B: It's over there, on the left .

Ask Excuse me. Where's the school/farm/ factory/post office? Help the Ss to answer, using on the left/right, next to..., in front of..., behind , etc . as appropriate.

Step 6 Practice

SB page 33, Part 2. Speech Cassette Lesson 33. Play the tape of the first dialogue and practise it with the Ss . Make up another example. Practise the second dialogue in the same way.

Then Ss practise in pairs, and make up their own dialogues. Get some pairs to act theirs out.

Step 7 Workbook

Do Wb Lesson 33, Ex. 1.

Hint : tell the Ss that sometimes they need to read ahead to find a clue to the missing word. The answer are: in/on, to, police, In, of, stop, Near/Behind, farm, to, park, factory, to, In, of, fruit, bookshop, to, office, On, hospital, to , hospital , on , of, toilet .

Wb Lesson 33, Exx . 2 and 3.

For Ex . 2, allow the Ss some time to prepare their questions. They then work in pairs, asking and answering.

Go through Ex . 3 with the whole class and give an example if there is time in class .Then getthe Ss to make up their own dialogue . Ask some pairs to act theirs out.

Homework

Finish off the Workbook exercises.

Write down the questions for Ex. 2 in the exercise books.

Lesson 34

Step 1 Revision .

Draw the same map on the Bb as in Lesson 33, Step 1 and Step 2 of the TB.

Practise the words and phrases in Lesson 33. Dictate the 4-skill words in SB Lesson 33. Call a student to write on the Bb. Check the spellings with the class.

Step 2 Presentation

Expand the map like this:

Tell the Ss You are here and point to x on the map. Say You want to go to the hospital. Walk along the road and take the third turning on the left . Trace the route in chalk, counting the turnings as you pass. Explain the meaning of turning. Repeat the directions. Ss listen and repeat. Give directions to other places on the map. Ss listen and repeat. Then ask Excuse me, is there a hospital near here? Help the Ss to give instructions . Repeat for other places .

Step 3 Practice

SB page 34. Speech Cassette Lesson 34. Listen to the first dialogue, then read it with the Ss. Let them practise it in pairs . They can draw a map as described in the dialogue.

Step 4 Practice

1 Listen to the tape of the second dialogue and practise it in the same way. (Note You'd better.... = You had better.... )Then talk about your own town or neighbourhood. Ask Is there a post office/park/hospital near here? Only ask about places which are far away!

Explain the meaning of need .

2 Present and practise the third dialogue in the. same way .

Step 5 Practice

Pairwork. Ss ask and answer about places on the map on colour page iv of the SB. One student asks Excuse me, is there a... near here? The other gives directions or says I'm sorry. I don't know....

Step 6 Workbook

Wb Lesson 34, Exx . 1-3 (oral work ) .

Practise a model answer with the class before the Ss work in pairs.

The answers to Ex . 2 are: 1 along, first, on; 2 turn, left; 3 road, third.

The answers to Ex. 3 are: 1 A: How heavy is the fish? B: It's about 2 kilos . 2 A: How long is the river? B: It's 910 kilometres . 3 A: How heavy is the machine? B: It's 15 kilos .

4 A: How tall is the tree? B: It's 6 metres .

Homework

Finish off the Workbook exercises .

Revise the dialogues on page 34 of the

Students' Book.

Write down the dialogues in Wb Ex. 3.

Lesson 35

Step 1 Revision

Revise the dialogues in SB Lesson 34.

Check the homework.

Step 2 Reading

SB page 35, Part 1. Speech Cassette Lesson 35. Look at the street map on colour page iv and listen to Number 1: Ss trace the route as they listen . They check their answers in pairs using the reading text . The answer is : at the Zoo . Play the tape and listen to Number 2, then check the answer with the class. The answer is: at the post office . Repeat the procedure.

Step 3 Write and talk

SB page 35, Part 1. Ss write a puzzle. using the ones in Part 1 as a model. They can take any place on the map on colour page iv as their starting point. They work in pairs. Get some Ss to read out their puzzle for the whole class.

Step 4 Listening

SB page 35, Part 2. Wb Lesson 35, Ex. 1. Listening Cassette Lesson 35. Play the tape three times, if necessary. Ask the Ss to look at the map on page iv .

Listening text:

1 You are at C.Go along the road, and take the first turning on the left, the second on the left . Where are you?

2 You are at D . Walk along the street. Take the second turning on the right, and the third turning on the left . What can you see on your left?

3 You are at E . Walk along the street, and take the third turning on the left, the second turning on the right . Where are you?

The answers are: 1 at the train station,

2 People's Hospital, 3 at the bookshop/ the bus station .

Step 5 Workbook

Wb Lesson 35, Exx . 2-4.

Do Ex . 2 orally with the whole class . Ss may trace the route on the map on colour page iii and use the expressions of position to ask and answer questions .

T: Which way can you find to the tigers?

SA: Three ways , I think .

T: Please tell me one of the ways .

SA: Go into the gate, walk along the road and then cross the bridge, take the first turning on the left, go along the road. Then you can see the tigers there .

There are no unique answers to these questions . Teachers can encourage Ss to find more answers . For Ex. 3, let the Ss write the missing words into the blanks before practising the dialogues. The answers are: Excuse me; I'm sorry/ Sorry ; better; quite/ very far; 'd/ had; kilometres; shall/ can; better .

Ex. 4 is optional. If possible, get one of the Ss to draw the finished map on the Bb while the other Ss draw the map in pencil in the workbook .

Homework

Finish off the Workbook exercises .

Revise the new vocabulary and structures in this unit.

Lesson 36

Step 1 Revision

Give the Ss some more puzzles for the map on colour page iv . Get some Ss to make up puzzles as well.

Step 2 Word families

SB page 36, Part 1. Speech Cassette Lesson 36. Play the tape for the Ss to listen and repeat. Practise the individual sounds, then show flashcards randomly and get the Ss to pronounce the words written on them.

Do Wb Lesson 36, Ex. 1. This exercise contains unknown words . Ss must work out their pronunciation with the spelling rules they know.

Step 3 Practice

Revise briefly the dialogues in SB page 33, Part 2. Ss work in pairs, asking and answering about places on the map.

SB page 36, Part 2. Speech Cassette Lesson 36. Books closed! Play the tape: Ss try to draw a map as they hear the first dialogue.

Play the tape again. Ss listen and repeat. Practise the dialogues with the class . Then Ss work in pairs: those giving directions should draw a simple diagram as they speak.

Ask some pairs to act out their dialogue. The student giving directions could draw the map on the Bb.

When the Ss practise the second dialogue, they can substitute post office and policeman with other words.

Step 4 Checkpoint 9

Go through Checkpoint 9 in the usual way.

Discuss any problems that the Ss may raise.

Step 5 Presentation

Present these dialogues, using appropriate gesturcs:

1 A: I'm hungry. I need to buy some food.

B: You'd better find a fruit/ food shop.

2 A: I'm a student. I need to buy some books.

B: You'd better find a bookshop.

Say these dialogues again. Get the Ss to listen and repeat. Get the Ss to give suitable responses to:

T: My shoes are broken. I need to buy some new ones.

I am going to Beijing/ Shanghai. I need to catch a train.

I am going shopping. I need to catch a bus.

Ask some Ss to make up similar sentences for the class to give suitable responses.

Step 6 Test

Dictate the following dialogue:

A: Excuse me. * Where's * the nearest * fruit shop, * please?

B: Take* the second turning* on the right. * It's next to* the post office.

A: Thanks very much .

B: You're welcome.

Step 7 Workbook

Wb Lesson 36, Exx. 2 and 3 are oral exercises, to be done in pairs . Ex. 3 is optional. Discuss. the answers with the whole class and tracs the routes on the map. There are about five ways to the school.

Homework

Write down two of the dialogues for Wb Ex. 2.

Learn the contents of Checkpoint 8.
