Teaching aims:

1. Get the students to learn some new words and useful expressions.

2. Train the students’ reading ability – how to read a speech.

3. Improve the students’ spoken English and written English.

4. Develop the students’ creative, comprehensive and consolidating abilities.

Teaching important points:

1. Help the students find out phrases used in the two speeches to state opinions and give supporting reasons.

2. Learn about two different opinions on the motion by analyzing the structures of the two speeches.

3. Try to find a solution to reach an agreement and encourage the students to express their own opinions by making short speeches.

Teaching difficult points:

1. How to help the students find out phrases used in the two speeches to state opinions and give supporting reasons.

2. How to make the structures of the two speeches clear to the students.

3. How to enable the students to find the solution to make short speeches, with the help of brief illustrations.

Teaching methods:

1. Enjoying the song -- Television and having a discussion before reading to arouse the students’ interest in this topic.

2. Scanning to look for the phrases and skimming to get the general ideas.

3. Further reading to get detailed information and analyze the structures of speeches.

4. Radiant thinking to develop the students’ creative and comprehensive abilities.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1: Lead-in

1. Listen to an English song -- Television, and ask:

A beautiful song, is it? What’s its name?

Do you like watching TV?

How long do you usually watch TV?

2. Show some pictures and explain what couch potatoes are.

Couch potatoes refer to people who spend too much time sitting and watching television.

3. Tell them what I’m worried about.

Recently, it worries me that my little daughter has become a small couch potato. She’s only four. Can television damage her health?

Step 2: Scanning

Analyze the structures of the two speeches by asking the following questions one by one and showing them some pictures when or where necessary.
